Abstract

This standard concerns the lighting of road tunnels and underpasses for motorized and mixed traffic. The application of this standard is restricted to the provision of adequate visibility to enable motorists and other road users to move through the tunnel safely. The use of daylight at tunnel entrances is included in this standard. The standard lays down calculation methods for tunnel lighting installations and gives the criteria for justification of measurement checks of the major lighting parameters. The standard is based on photometric considerations. Psychological, pysiological and behaviour aspects are not explicitly included. The standard refers to design aspects of tunnels. The compulsory aspects concern arrangements, levels, etc., which are related only to traffic safety, whereas aspects concerning comfort etc. are included as recommendations. The main text contains the normative part of the standard; the Appendix is informative.
