Abstract

The author begins by summarising the development of European databases to their current state, and highlights some of the issues that have been raised. Then he examines the way in which recent European research projects have attempted to use statistical data to examine road safety issues in Europe, and the extent to which current European data has been useful for this. Finally he looks at recent ideas of how databases might be extended. Databases mentioned include IRTAD, CARE, CAREPLUS. The European DUMAS, MASTER and SAFESTAR projects are briefly described.
