Abstract

The objective of this paper is to highlight the role of energy in transport in close relation to the way the transport market is organized. Trends in primary energy consumptions are first described, followed by a breakdown of primary energy consumption by economic sectors (including transport) in the European community. The energy performance and services provided by various types of transport (private car, bus, train, rail, minibus or taxi) are then described and compared for various european countries.
