Abstract

In this paper, the author outlines the plans for implementation of RDS-TMC (Radio Data System - Traffic Message Channel) systems in Europe. RDS-TMC is a method of transmitting high quality, accurate, timely and relevant traffic and travel information without interrupting normal broadcast services and in the language chosen by the user. European projects (ECORTIS and FORCE) are co-ordinating the exploitation, guaranteeing quality, continuity and compatibility. Each country has completed its own workplan, combined into a European Workplan for coherence and consistency across Europe, in accordance with the Agreed Layer for European RDS-TMC, or ALERT for short. Full details of the European Workplan, the ALERT manual, the partners involved in the European projects and project results are available on the RDS-TMC web site: www/rds-tmc.com.
