Abstract

EUROSCOPE is one of the large scale demonstrator projects of the Transport Sector of the 4th Framework Programme of the European Union (DGXIII). The project builds upon the experience of the earlier SCOPE project and upon the substantial infrastructure installed and operational in the sites of Hampshire/Southampton, Cologne, Piraeus, Rotterdam, Genoa, Hamburg, Strasbourg, Cork and Brandenburg. A main aim of the EUROSCOPE project is to improve the efficiency, safety and environmental aspects of urban and regional transport through the use of information, both pre-trip and within-trip. The information is used to encourage increased usage of non-car modes, influence trip timing/substitution, reduce destination search time, as well as leading to better route choice. It may be enhanced by associated measures such as traffic control and public transport priority. This paper describes the deployment and use of roadside Variable Message Signs (VMS) within the EUROSCOPE project. It does not consider the parallel use of VMS for public transport information.
