The Dutch Department of Transport (Directorate Utrecht) is planning to test the possibility for using the emergency lane as an additional lane during rush hours. The aim is to obtain a better usage of the existing infrastructure. The test will take place along the A28 motorway in the direction of the city of Utrecht between the Den Dolder/Zeist and De Uithof/De Bilt exits. By means of marking and signing it should be made clear to road users that usage of the emergency lane is allowed during rush hours and not allowed at all other times. Three TNO experts have evaluated and optimized the experimental stretch design. The most critical point is the exit to the additional parallel lane in the direction of de Uithof/De Bilt. (A)
