Abstract

In 1992 the project `Friesestaatweg veilig' (towards a safer `Friesestraatweg') started. The Friesestraatweg is the name of the road N855 in the province of Groningen, between the city of Groningen and the border of the province of Friesland, which was characterized by a relative large amount of traffic accidents. The aim of the project is to reduce the number of traffic accidents and victims on the road by 50% in the next decade, by means of reducing risky traffic behaviour of road users in general, and reducing speeding behaviour of motorists in particular. The measures which have been taken so far consists of police information activities, selective law enforcement by the police, and several infrastructural several infrastructural adjustments of the road. The results of the evaluation study, regarding the second year of the project, show a substantial and lasting reduction of the driving speed at one location. At the other registration no speed reduction could be observed.
