Abstract

This before and after study evaluates a pilot project that was carried out in the Netherlands in the year 1991. The aim of the project was to prevent driving while under the influence of alcohol (DWI) after visiting a sport canteen. 10 field hockey clubs, 6 tennis clubs and 8 soccer clubs participated in the project. The Groningen Rijkswaterstaat road safety project was involved in the evaluation study carried out among the soccer clubs. The evaluation consists of the following three parts: (1) a questionnaire survey among the participating sport clubs; (2) a telephone questionnaire survey among both the board and bar owners of these clubs; and (3) behavioural observations of both the members and visitors of sport clubs. Generally, the willingness of sport clubs to participate in the project was disappointing. The results show that the percentage of DWI cyclists was higher than that of DWI car drivers. This difference increased further in the after study. The percentage of DWI drivers of tennis clubs was lower than that of DWI drivers of the soccer and field hockey clubs, in both the before and after study. It is concluded that the decrease of driving after alcohol consumption cannot established for the moment.
