Abstract

This paper presents a pilot study attempting to investigate the impacts of implementing Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) on a toll facility with the use of the simulation model, INTEGRATION. Using the Massachusetts Turnpike in Boston as a case study, the impact on traffic operations due to different ETC toll plaza configurations are evaluated. The results of this initial study demonstrate that the model is suitable for toll operations evaluation and identify further sensitivity analyses that will need to be performed using the model in order to address its application to toll operations analysis with greater confidence.
