Abstract

This study aims to develop a macroscopic traffic simulator that can incorporate the characteristics of heavy vehicles for investigating the effects of urban transport measures. By using video pictures of fixed cameras on motorways, traffic flow is analysed, and then the simulator is applied to a test road network for assessing the influence of access controls of heavy vehicles to city centre. Results showed that total travel times and NOx emissions reduced in the restricted area, but increased in the whole road network. The importance of selecting the areas where access restrictions are implemented is also discussed. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
