Abstract

A period of increased random breath testing occurred in Melbourne in 1983. During the period preliminary breath testing stations operated for 1213 hours and over 65000 drivers were tested. The increased testing was supported by mass media publicity. During the campaign period nighttime serious casualty accidents were 18-23% below their expected value.
