Abstract

Within the framework of this paper, the traffic and environmental impact of bus lanes introduced in urban central areas is evaluated through the use of traffic simulation modelling techniques. The results from the examination of various parameters such as energy consumption and pollutants emitted (CO, CO2, NOx, HC, and Pb) through the use of the traffic simulation model Simulation and Assignment of Traffic to Urban Road Networks (SATURN) are presented. The reference area is the centre of the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, which is characterized by severe traffic and environmental problems. For the covering abstract see ITRD E128680.
