Abstract

The Japanese National Police Agency (NPA) is planning to establish the Dynamic Route Guidance System (DRGS) as one of the subsystems of the Universal Traffic Management System (UTMS). DRGS is the system which is to alleviate traffic congestion by providing information on optimum routes to drivers, and the Centrally Determined Route Guidance System (CDRGS) is one of the forms which realizes DRGS. It is necessary that evaluation of the effectiveness of CDRGS is performed for each area because this effectiveness depends largely on area deployed. Evaluation of the system has been carried out in Saitama Prefecture where DRGS will be employed in 2000, as well as CDRGS simulation reflecting Saitamais geography. The results showed that the route information gives the drivers almost 15 percent reduction in travel time. It is verified that CDRGS is effective for the driver, and also expected that the system is economically effective and efficient.
