Abstract

Kirklees Metropolitan Council's (KMC) Pass Plus scheme has shown some positive results with a lower than expected self-reported accident rate. A significant improvement in driver's attitude was identified in novice drivers completing Pass Plus through the KMC scheme three months post course. The KMC scheme encourages the participating driving instructor to alter their instruction techniques, increasing the content of instruction on human factors associated with accident involvement at both pre- and post-test. The instructor training delivered by KMC as part of the scheme may be influencing the training of over 1200 drivers per year in the local area. The instructor training appears to have improved the participating instructor's view of the scheme. This may lead to the driving instructor promoting the scheme more actively and so leading to higher levels of participation by novice drivers. For the covering abstract see ITRD E157496
