Abstract

The objective of the paper is to evaluate the EUROSID-1 dummy and determine its applicability for system level occupant simulation. The dummy thorax is of primary importance in side impact simulations. Therefore, isolated sled tests on the thorax were performed and the model predictions were compared to the test results at different speeds and with different foam paddings. The evaluation was extended to localized impacts on thorax and pelvis of the complete model to determine the sensitivity of the dummy. To determine the response of the dummy to different speeds, rigid wall sled tests were performed at three different speeds and the dummy response was compared to that of the test. Finally, a system level test in a prototype vehicle concluded the evaluation and recommendations for further improvement are stated.
