Abstract

A study was undertaken to develop an improved headlamp beam for use in conditions of oncoming or preceding traffic. After a review of the literature concerning headlighting and visual perception, a number of candidate beam patterns were evaluated. Results of subjective and objective tests indicate that the best of the test lamps (upgraded SAE low beam) was only marginally better than the standard SAE low beam.
