Abstract

Factors analysis is used to investigate over 1000 pedestrian accidents in Maryland during 1970-1973. This statistical technique assisted in reducing the complex problem of examining many related variables associated with each accident to determine those that contributed to the pedestrians' unsafe environment. The study is divided into 5 areas of investigation, namely: (1) driver; (2) environment; (3) pedestrian; (4) roadway; and (5) vehicle. The concept of a pedestrian- vehicle conflict is developed and its relationship to these 5 areas is defined.
