Abstract

This paper reports evaluation findings of the impacts of newly installed variable message signs (VMS) on travel times on the motorway network around Amsterdam. This evaluation study was part of the EC fourth framework project DACCORD. The new VMS were added to an existing system of VMS, called Route Information Amsterdam (RIA), and display queue lengths on downstream motorway sections. The paper focuses on the resulting changes in the level and variability of travel time on selected corridors in the Amsterdam area, and presents a research methodology to investigate such effects. The main findings are that the new VMS lead to considerable reductions in the average travel time on a number of corridors in the Amsterdam area, and reduce the variability of travel time through these corridors.
