Abstract
A minor study was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of undertaking a full-scale study of drivers' subjective impressions of road junctions. The purpose of the study was to obtain estimates of the level of agreement between observers who made subjective judgements of specified junction characteristics. These included conspicuity, priority conditions, visibility of other traffic and safety. The results were intriguing since there was a wide disparity between the estimates of some of the subjects. This decreases the practical usefulness of such estimates as traffic safety tools. However, the results pose an interesting question on the process of subjective evaluation and some lessons to be learned about driver behaviour. (A)
