This report describes the results of an evaluation of the Philips Route Guidance System fitted to a Volve 460 car. The objective was to determine whether the use of a route guidance systen would affect the driving performance and safety as well as the mobility of the subjects. The trials were mounted in Gothenburg in September 1994. A test group of 27 subjects, 23 men and 4 women, aged 65 years and over participated in the trials. In addition, a control group of 13 elderly subjects, all men, tested a route guidance system with Swedish voice information and a group of 13 young subjects, 7 men and 6 women, provided comparisons with the elderly drivers. The research followed the basic methodology for all tests carried out within the EDDIT programme (see Deliverable 16, 1993), that consisted of pre-test characterisation, experimental field trials and post-test questionnaires.
