Abstract

The Scottish Road Safety Campaign (SRSC) are active in promoting road safety education, in particular its inclusion in the Scottish school curriculum. This is supported by a wide range of activity that channels the delivery of road safety education in other, less formal settings. One such approach is the 'travel pack' which was introduced for children in 1995. Since its introduction, the travel pack has been continually reviewed. In 1998, the SRSC invited an external organisation to propose alternative methods of raising the profile, impact and awareness of the pack. After this review, the recommendations that were made were incorporated in the redesign of a new travel pack for use in 1999. The 1999 pack consists of 2 booklets - The Highway Code for Young Road Users and the Journey Activity Book - an Audiotape, the Hazard Alley competition postcard and a pen and is aimed at children between 8 and 10 years old. The key objectives of this reserach evaluation were: to assess the extent and nature of the travel pack's use; to obtain feedback from the target group on the contents of the pack; to assess the potential benefits of the travel pack resource; and to measure the reaction of parents towards the travel pack.
