Abstract

In order to add to the anecdotal information in the current literature, the present study was designed to identify and analyse field data on side impact injuries in vehicles equipped with side airbags. The United States National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) database was queried with the constraint that all vehicles must adhere to the federal Motor vehicle SafetyStandards FMVSS 214. Sixty eight cases were discovered with side airbag deployments that has 56 left side and 12 right side impacts. In these 68 cases, seven cases had no injury. Approximately one third of the injured cases had only AIS 1 level trauma. From a trauma perspective, 446 injuries occurred to various body regions, with a majority (two-third) identified at the AIS 1 level. Analyses of these epidemiological data are presented as afunction of occupant, vehicle and crash-related variables, and type of side airbag. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134311.
