Abstract

A study has been conducted to assess the affect of the Swedish vehicle actuated green time extension function known as past-end-green, when applied to fixed time co-ordinated signal control in a low speed urban environment. The aim of the study has been to assess the transferability of a function originally designed for use in high-speed isolated signal controlled junctions. Results from simulations confirm that using past-end-green is beneficial in terms of reducing delays and stops, thus generating "smoother" traffic flows through congested urban areas. Average vehicle delays in the test area were reduced by as much as 4 per cent when using past-end-green. For the covering abstract see ITRD E209471.
