Abstract

The purpose of the EVITA project was to, by means of computer simulation, estimate the safety impacts of different grades of Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) vehicles with respect to rear-end collisions, vehicle-pedestrian collisions and intersection conflicts. Simulation becomes popular in evaluation of effects of ITS system because of its ability to mimic the virtual situations and to partly replace the expensive and complex field experiments. ISA is a type of vehicle based ITS system but few simulation studies were applied to this system. To explore the safety effects of different ISA penetration grades, simulations, however, seem to be a very useful method. In this section, ISA and its effects from the previous experiments will be introduced at first. The safety problem in urban area will be described based on the statistics of accidents in Sweden within previous periods (A).
