Abstract

This paper examines change in highway capacity in relation to the motor vehicle fleet and driving behaviours. It firstly considers the results of real observations and simulations conducted abroad, the findings of which reveal an increase in capacity. An experimental validation was then carried out, backed up by various analyses of observations collected over the last fifteen years on a large expressway. Modelling the maximum flow data confirmed that there has been a significant increase in capacity on this site in the Pads region and made it possible to quantify the changes which have taken place.
