Abstract

This paper discusses the uses of roundabouts in France since 1997. It notes that the number of roundabouts has increased (they doubled between 1993 and 2003) and the number of traffic accidents has remained the same. On tram lines, roundabouts have replaced traditional intersections. Roundabouts have also been constructed close to railway level crossings. This latter situation presents challenges, though, such as how to make sure that no vehicle is stopped on the level crossing when the gates close.
