Abstract

This article considers the implementation by municipalities of traffic management systems which can be updated in the future to Advanced Traffic Management Systems. A need is described for structured data handling and communications with flexibility for future enhancement. The advantages of a Centralised Distributed System (CDS) are discussed. Sonex's CDS, ESCORT, is then described. The use of standard PCs and LAN equipment allows the central facility to be easily upgraded. The flexible field communication protocol and SQL client/server database allow the field equipment to be upgraded. Changes necessary to procurement policies are considered. The use of ESCORT by the City of Dallas, Texas, is briefly outlined.
