Abstract

Previous work suggested that faulty operation of traffic signals is resulting in significant economic and energy losses in Ireland. The vehicle detectors which are part of the control equipment at signal sites are identified as a major cause of faulty operation. A possible alternative to inductive loops in certain situations is radar. The drawback with radar is that it does not accurately detect vehicles at a given point on the approach of signals. rtol
