Abstract

Recent research in Denmark has focussed on the assessment of the environmental impact of roads and traffic, particularly on soil and water near a road. Environmental monitoring projects to evaluate the effects of roads on the environment have evaluated pollution at motorway study sites in Denmark. Polluting substances recorded include traces of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals recovered from brake materials, rust, paint, tyre wear, and exhaust gases. Road maintenance operations contribute deicing salts and asphalt from road surfaces. Results of the study are to be included in the Dutch POLMIT project, and will include comparable results from other European countries.
