This report focuses specifically on the wide range of technologies that are available. Its aim is to provide information which helps to identify key technological directions and strategic technology issues likely to influence Australian transport organisations over the next few years. The review complements a separate study undertaken for ITS Australia by Booz-Allen & Hamilton, which is expected to report in the first half of 1998 on the potential benefits of ITS, priority application areas, and a strategic analysis of ITS in Australia. This report summarises technological innovations in road and transport systems in Australia and overseas, then notes technologies in the road infrastructure, rail, air and marine sectors. Appendices contain background information on road sector organisations' activities, enabling technologies, and the Australian environment for technological change. (A)
