In Estonia the use of studded tyres has been increased by ca 10 per cent since the beginning of the 1990s. Starting with the winter 1997/98 technical requirements and limitations in time on the use of winter tyres have been introduced. The paper presents an investigation into the socio-economical effects of the use of different use of tyres in the winter period. Calculations include journey time, vehicle owners' costs, accidents and pavement wear.
