Abstract

The main concept of the system is to make urban areas livable again and to give vulnerable road users more protection. The german demonstration project wants to integrate the automobile into the fabric of the neighbourhood in a manner which is compatible with the other residential functions. The project started in December 1981 in the following cities: Berlin, Mainz, Esslingen, Ingolstadt, Buxtehude and Borgentreich. One of the strategies to gain in area- wide application of "Verkehrsberuhigung" is public participation during the whole period of the project from all public groups and involved people among the authorities
