This article summarises the results of a study that tested a set of survey questions designed to collect information on people's experiences of road accidents. The questions were tested in the UK Office for National Statistics' Omnibus Survey in August and September 2006. The NS Omnibus was used to test the questions before their inclusion in the National Travel Survey (NTS) from January 2007. The questions were to be used to monitor the extent of involvement in road accidents, both involving and not involving injury, and levels of reporting to the police. The NTS data may offer an opportunity to assess the impact of reporting and recording practices on STATS19 (statistics obtained from police records of road accidents) trends. The data collected through the NTS will offer the opportunity to link road accident data to personal travel data collected in the survey. (Author/publisher)
