Abstract

THE STRUCTURE AND SUPERVISION OF TWO EXPERIMENTS USING FLEETS OF COMMERCIALLY OPERATED ROAD FREIGHT VEHICLES TO IDENTIFY THE EFFECTS OF VEHICLE LOADING ON VARIOUS ITEMS OF OPERATING COSTS ARE DESCRIBED. THE PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED ARE EXAMINED IN RELATION TO EXPERIMENT DESIGN AND THE RELIABILITY OF THE INFORMATION COLLECTED. THE ANALYSIS OF THE DATA IS DISCUSSED, PARTICULARLY IN RELATION TO THE FORM IN WHICH THE INFORMATION WAS COLLECTED, AND CONCLUSIONS OF RELEVANCE TO FUTURE EXPERIMENT DESIGN ARE ADVANCED. THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS ARE PRESENTED AND COMPARISONS MADE WITH RELATIONSHIPS DERIVED FROM CROSS-SECTIONAL ANALYSIS OF AGGREGATED DATA ON FLEET OPERATIONS. A DETAILED SUB-EXPERIMENT CARRIED OUT USING ONE TRUCK ON THE HUME HIGHWAY TO RELATE FUEL CONSUMPTION TO GRADIENT, CONGESTION AND SURFACE ROUGHNESS IS ALSO DESCRIBED. (A).
