Abstract

Half of the people in the U.S.A. live on 1 percent of the land, and there is a continual drift to the big cities. The author, president of the Franklin Institute, hold the view that all of the land must be used for living, not just tiny fractions of it. To do this one must look at solutions that envisage urban dispersal. The need for a national experimental cities program is emphasized. The history and set-up of the Minnesota Experimental City are described. The various aspects, such as construction and disassembly, waste collection and recycling, transportation problems, communications, population, management and cost are discussed.
