Dynamical lateral position between a lane marker and a vehicle is an important variable for design and standardization of a lane departure warning system. For success in design and standardization, the distribution and the variance of the dynamical lateral position on an actual road must be analyzed. The dynamical lateral position was measured on Japanese expressways by two charge coupled device (CCD) cameras and image processing. From the measured data, the distribution of the dynamical lateral position is analyzed. Also, time to departure, a useful parameter for the warning criterion, is proposed. (A*)
