Abstract

Various investigations, experiments and studies such as fundamental experimental study, indoor model test and lighting test for coloured light source were made before planning the tunnel lighting for Nagoya-Kobe Expressway. According to the results of above listed studies, sodium lamps lighting was adopted for some tunnels which were opened to public traffic in july 1963. This paper covers the outline of the experimental study on the lighting effect of sodium lamps used in the expressway tunnel conducted in order to investigate the actual performance of new type of tunnel lighting as well as the experimental study on the visibility through smoke in relation to the lighting in order to establish economical combination of lighting and ventilation.
