Abstract

This paper describes the main functional contributions made by artificial intelligence in SURF (Urban Traffic Signal Control System), the automobile traffic regulation system implemented by the City of Paris. These contributions result from the trials of SAGE (Expert System for Traffic Congestion Management). The first section describes the running of the trials and the experience acquired, while the latter two present the new SURF2000 system and the contribution made to it by artificial intelligence.
