Abstract

Expert system technology can be adopted to include highway design applications. Highway engineering problems that require engineering judgement and theoretical analysis, such as intersection design and access management, are suitable for expert system technology development. Alberta has developed two expert systems: the highway intersection design expert system (HIDES) and the access management evaluation system (AMES). This paper describes the rationale and development strategy for these two systems, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. (A)
