Abstract

The aim of this study - by a team of psychologists - was to obtain some purchase on the nature and extent of the situational and psychological car dependence of English motorists. The study was in three phases: a qualitative phase in which car drivers were interviewed in some dept; an intermediate phase in which an extensive questionnaire, developed on the basis of interview responses and previous research in this area, was piloted; and a final phase in which a modified questionnaire was administered to a large national sample of car drivers. The report focuses on the first and final phases. (A)
