Abstract

Calcined bauxite has been demonstrated as an excellent, albeit expensive, aggregate material for road surfacing which has unique properties with regard to its performance under traffic. Its high wear resistance and anti-skid properties have resulted in a dramatic decrease in the number of accidents wherever the surface has been laid. This paper discusses results from an examination of certain physical and chemical properties of this heterogeneous material and relates them so its outstanding performance as a surfacing aggregate.
