Abstract

This paper discusses the outlook for trailer-on-flat-car (TOFC) service and its wheelles cousin, container-on-flat-car service (COFC). The analysis considers many of the factors directly or indirectly affecting the future of this coordinated transport method, which has experienced a remarkable growth in the past decade. The conclusion is that piggyback service will continue to demonstrate strong growth trends, but the rapidity of this growth will involve many considerations which do not permit a firm quantative forecast.
