Abstract

NTHSA has performed a study of the occupant safety problem in cars and other vehicles which strike the rear ends of heavy trucks and the results are reported in "Rulemaking Support Paper for Truck Rear End Guard Protection". That document has identified the principal factors which influence the risk of occupant injury. This document has been written to provide more detailed consideration of the factors influencing occupant injury in vehicles impacting the rear of heavy trucks and to derive the representative values for such factors as well as their probabilities of accurrence.
