Abstract

In the framework of this supplementary study regarding the field trial of longer goods vehicles investigations have been conducted how technical regulations for vehicles and vehicle combinations with extra length (LKWÜberlStVAusnV) have been implemented by the participating freight forwarders. This study is based on the information which has been provided by the participating freight forwarders to the Federal Highway Research Institute as well as on vehicle examinations and questionnaires. It depicts the state of 23th June 2016 with 147 longer goods vehicles (LGV) of 58 freight forwarders. 80 LGV of type 3 represent the biggest share. Alternative possibilities of implementing technical regulations with respect to axle load monitoring systems, camera monitor systems for the rear and the suitability for intermodal transport were extensively examined. The analysis of the axle load monitoring systems revealed that at 80 % of all LGVs the axle loads can be comfortably read off directly in the cab. Camera monitor systems on the rear have been evaluated as practical and are welcomed at daily usage when manoeuvring. Moreover, braking tests show that LGV loaded to their weight maximum of 40 t have a slightly longer brake distance than articulated trucks when volumetrically fully loaded with the same but less goods up to 28 t total mass. Taking the predecessor study in a comprehensive view also into account comparable brake distances of LGV compared to conventional trucks can be stated. The effectiveness of EVSC systems (Electronic Vehicle Stability Control) at LGV was investigated by means of literature research as well as expert and manufacturer interviews. EVSC are designed in a way that they stabilise LGV reliably and improve vehicle safety of LGV. (Author/publisher)
