Failsafe requirements of road traffic signal equipment.

Abstract

THIS PAPER IS CONCERNED WITH THE FAILSAFE OPERATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL EQUIPMENT AND WITH THE ACCEPTABILITY TO THE PUBLIC OF THE SERVICE PROVIDED AT GIVEN LEVELS OF EQUIPMENT RELIABILITY. IN A STUDY IN PROGRESS, OF WHICH THE FIRST PART IS DESCRIBED HERE, THE MODES OF FAILURE AND ASSOCIATED HAZARD SEVERITIES ARE FIRST DETERMINED, THE LATTER BEING RELATED TO THE ACCEPTABILITY OF EACH FAILURE MODE. A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL FAILURES IS DESCRIBED, AS WELL AS THE METHODS DEVELOPED FOR ASSESSING RELIABILITY CRITERIA FOR A GIVEN SYSTEM. THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF HIGHER STANDARDS OF RELIABILITY AND OF FAILSAFE OPERATION ARE EXAMINED. THE PRINCIPAL FINDINGS TO DATE ARE DISCUSSED IN THE LIGHT OF THE FURTHER RESEARCH PLANNED. (A).
