Abstract

During the period from mid-1988 to early-1990 the working group "Selection of Expert System Projects" has done some studies on the subject of "failures and successes of expert systems". These studies have focused entirely on expert system activities in the Netherlands. First an inquiry was made under all large companies and the small and mid-sized companies that were known to be active in the field of expert systems. The analysis of the data acquired has resulted in a comprehensive survey of the "state of the art" in the Netherlands, and a preliminary idea about success factors for an expert system project.
