Abstract

Four failures of heavy vehicle tow bars are described and the causes of failure analysed. Three of the failures were due to incorrect welding procedures and the results of tests to determine correct levels of preheat are given. One failure was due to faulty material and the results of a fracture mechanics analysis to determine minimum charpy impact values for cold formed rectangular hollow section for use in heavy vehicle tow bars are detailed.
