Abstract

In 1989 there were 45555 fatalities in 40718 fatal crashes. This is a decrease from 1988 in both the number of fatalities (3.3%) and fatal crashes (3.4%). In 1989, an estimated 49.2% of all traffic fatalities were alcohol related, compared to 50.2% in 1988. The reported restraint usage by passenger car occupants in fatal crashes increased from 33.2% in 1988 to 35 % in 1989.
