Abstract

Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway is very important in the Tokyo area. Thirty years has passed since the first expressway opened and some deterioration has been found in steel bridge structures. Fatigue problems had not been considered in bridge design in Japan, but many cracks have been found in steel members recently. This paper reports the state and cause of fatigue cracks in steel piers and steel orthotropic decks in the expressway.
