Abstract

The transport of tourists comprises 50-75% of the total impact of tourismon the environment. The European Commission plans to uncouple the economic growth of the European tourism sector from its negative environmental impact. As a start to this, a feasibility and preparatory study was conducted on European targeted action for sustainable transport and tourism. The aim was to develop sustainable production and consumption patterns in European tourism. The partners in the project are listed and the subject matterreviewed. The approach taken to engage stakeholders with a role in the uncoupling tourism growth from negative effects on the environment is outlined. Tourism maps were generated and a sustainability framework was developed. A new Sustainability Impact Inventory method and a Sustainability Impact Assessment method for the assessment of good practices were developed. The importance of incorporating information about the environmental impactof choices in information for tourists was stressed. Best practices were reviewed.
